This technology is called switched digital video and it holds a lot of promise because it allows a cable television provider to send just 1 channel to 1 cable box at any given time instead of the shotgun approach where all channels are sent to all viewers at the same time. Since only one channel is delivered at any given time, there can be a lot more total channels offered- more than would ever fit onto a single cable! This is definitely a technology that has a lot of promise.
Another great new technology that cable TV companies are quickly implementing is HDTV. This new television format, which stands for High Definition Television, was specially designed to provide viewers with a higher quality picture, multi-speaker stereo sound, and a wider field of view- much like what they'd experience in a commercial movie theater. Despite the fact that this form of television was originally meant for watching movies, it's now available for sports programming, popular TV series, educational programming, and even the news! HDTV is based on digital TV, but because it requires so much bandwidth to transmit, it's one of the major motivating factors behind implementing switched digital video.
Another exciting new technology that the cable TV industry is focusing on is Video On Demand. Video On Demand essentially provides an archive of video clips that can be accessed and streamed directly to an individual cable box at any given time. In other words, viewers can choose what to watch and then start to watch it immediately! This is obviously closely related to switched digital video and can be used to watch everything from short format videos to movies in HDTV format! It's often used as a pay per view service that provides many of the advantages of a video rental.
