Actor; his older, more serious, films include: “Forbidden Planet” (1956), “The Poseidon Adventure” (1972); became synonymous with film comedies after being cast by David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker to play a comic role straight in “Airplane!” (1980); collaborated with the same group to star in short-lived TV series “Police Squad” (1982), which begat the “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!” (1988) film trilogy; later comic roles include President Harris in some of the “Scary Movie” films; also serves as president of the International Better Hearing Institute.
